A reader’s guide to the multiverse

The Six
Celestial Courts.

Six major Courts shape life across the multiverse. Their members share Celestial power; their corporations turn that influence into services, institutions, and everyday encounters.

What is a Court?

Shared Celestial power

The principal Celestial Courts bring Celestial Unique Souls into a shared pool of power. Members gain access to their combined strength. Other named Courts, including the Court of Spiders, have their own membership contexts.

Games that decide an era

The six major Courts operate at the governing level of the multiverse. In Council: No Fun, wagers on games, often AlterNet Roller derby, determine who governs the next era and sets its rules. Those rules can reach into everyday life, not just the arena.

Courts, companies and teams

Court membership is a power-sharing relationship. A corporation has employees, services, contracts and customers. A sponsored school team is another layer again. A character’s employer does not tell you whether they hold a Court seat.

The principal six, not the only six

The Court of Spiders and Sunstream Court also appear in the stories. The six featured here are the major governing Courts, not every Court in existence.

The traditional seats

Five Celestial abilities form the traditional pool, sometimes joined by a champion. Other arrangements exist.

El Sol ›Limitless potential.
La Luna ›Mimics other Unique abilities.
La Muerte ›Control over time.
La Estrella ›Stellar plasma.
El Mundo ›Connection to an Earth’s spirit.
Court ChampionOften a La Calavera, adding exceptional strength.

The larger picture

No Court exists alone.

Court → corporation → school team

These are connected layers, not interchangeable names. Court membership concerns Celestial power and governance. Corporate affiliation and school sponsorship do not grant a seat in a Court.

Six major Courts, many other circles

The Court of Spiders and Sunstream Court also appear in the stories. The six featured here are the major governing Courts, not an exhaustive count of every Court in the multiverse.

Shared power, distinct authority

Court members can draw on pooled Celestial strength. That shared power is a different matter from the right to govern an era, which the major Courts can contest through games.

An era is not an eternal law

A ruling Court can institute rules for its era. Read specific policies in the context of the story where they appear, rather than treating them as permanent laws of the setting.
