THE MOMENT
"It's a very human response..," Ruby nodded formally at the President of the United States as they walked alone through a narrow hallway with chrome-polished walls and floor. "... the mere existence of something unexpected seems to be an 'invasion' by default. We've seen it before, and I can assure you that Chroma Corp. has no interest in 'taking over' your Earth. Naturally, I don't expect you to take my word for it," she added as they reached a single door at the end of the hall.
The President, John Smith, didn't know exactly where they were. They'd entered the lengthy hallway from the White House, but as far as he knew, this passage wasn't supposed to exist. And, when she led him through the second door, he found himself in the Oval Office again, but this time there was an unfamiliar woman sitting behind the Resolute desk. She rose, but instead of standing upright, she fluttered up with translucent insect wings and flew over the desk to greet them.
"Hi, Ruby," she smiled at the shorter professional woman first, then she addressed the important-looking man. "And, you must be Mr. President," she said. "You're about to vote on whether to let Chroma Corp. claim your Earth, and I'm here to tell you it's a great idea," she nodded.
"A... fairy President...?" President Smith asked. Not only was she a woman, she wasn't even human. John Smith wasn't inherently against a woman in power, he just was not used to it. His Earth had never so much as even considered a female president.
"Yeah, it was a battle," the fairy President nodded with a smile. "When Chroma Corp. arrived on this Earth, they tore down the veil that kept our kind hidden, and the world adjusted. It wasn't smooth, especially early on. People accused Chroma Corp. of invading the world and taking over, not taking into account those of us who had already been here for all of history. There were some vocal, bigoted groups claiming it was the end of humanity, but they're always mad about something," she shrugged.
"Time passes like it always does. Chroma Corp. did its thing, and over time, people saw the company improving their lives. It turns out that coexisting is actually pretty easy with the right frameworks. They arrived on this Earth over a decade ago... and I'm the first non-human President of the U.S. I may be a fairy, but I was born in the good ol' U. S. of A.," she grinned.
"I have another appointment," Ruby told President Smith. "President Faire will show you around and give you an idea of what a Chroma Earth looks like, to help inform your decision. I likely won't see you again before the vote; that's intentional," she said. "Make up your own mind, and make peace with your vote being one of many."
"Wait.. why aren't the other U.N. members here? Shouldn't they meet the Fairy President, uh, President Faire, as well? Why aren't they on the tour?"
"Why would they be on your tour?" Ruby shook her head with the question. "I am coordinating meetings for all of them with their counterparts on alternate Chroma Earths, which is where I'm headed next," she reminded him that she was on the way out. "Try to remember that Chroma Corp. is here to help humanity, and there's a whole world outside your country."
