THE MOMENT

"Wait," Drew had had a fraught morning. He was sitting in what appeared to be a General's office, except that instead of the distinguished soldier in the photographs decorating the wall, a pale teenage girl with long snow-white hair and crimson eyes was revealing things that seemed unbelievable and unnecessary for him to know. And she didn't look like a member of the nuclear family in the picture on the desk either. "You're telling me everyone on this military base is a spy, and I'm the only actual soldier?!" He asked as he gathered his thoughts, and she nodded. "This has to be a joke."

"The funny thing is...," Rhapsody laughed. "It was supposed to be." She smiled with sparkling red eyes. "It's weird how things work out, isn't it?" she giggled a bit more.

"What are you talking about?" Drew shook his head.

"We've traced your presence here back to the employee of origin. It seems he was bored and wanted to spice up someone's day by sending you here instead of an actual military base." Drew's eyes narrowed, but Rhapsody continued. "As it happens, the employees who should've picked you out of the transfer along the way were simply rubber-stamping any name that crossed their desk; each believing that if someone's name got to them, they were already vetted enough."

"What?" Drew wasn't sure what that meant for him. Parts of it were starting to sound plausible, and if this was a base full of spies, what were they going to do to keep that secret?

"The quick version is, it was a joke, and four people lost their jobs over it, including the instigator. Naturally, we can't have you returned to a proper base while knowing this spy training facility exists."

"What do you mean?" he stood, purely out of reflexive anxiety.

"Don't worry," Rhapsody smiled, and it almost seemed to brighten the room. Her warmth was enough to put him at ease, but he remained on his feet. "Since we've inconvenienced you, and you've discovered this facility's existence, there's no harm in showing you a bit more. My company, Sharp Development, understands you're not at fault here. To apologize, I'll be introducing you to the multiverse," she said. "We can't have you on this Earth with knowledge of this base, however, we can put you on any other Earth you'd like to live on. In a way, you don't have to worry about basic survival needs anymore. Sharp Development also has our own private military and our own universities, should you choose to pursue the military career that you just began, or any higher learning."

"I've never ever heard of Sharp Development...," Drew was finding it hard to believe, and he intentionally ignored the 'multiverse' concept for now.

"Well, that doesn't mean we don't exist," Rhapsody laughed again. "Until this morning, you didn't know there was a military base training spies; and according to your file... you lived in this town your whole life before joining the military."
