THE MOMENT

"So, the examination is complete,..." the nurse smiled at him with a nod. "...and you show zero signs of being turned." Vernon wasn't ready to hear such a decisive answer so soon. She hadn't even drawn any blood. The nurse took his vitals, waved a light over him, and essentially gave him a good once-over before deciding he was fine.

"That makes no sense!" He was trying not to fall into the trap of telling her how to do her job, but surely it couldn't have been that thorough. "I was bitten by a vampire! I should've become one by now!" he reminded her why he was there in case she was that inept. He'd been bitten over a week ago and essentially gave up on life. He didn't know what would happen when he finally turned, but he wasn't looking forward to it. Vampires were known and even legal citizens, but he never wanted to become a vicious monster. Not that he was assaulted by a vicious monster. The bite had been something he wanted in that particular moment. He regretted it the next morning, when he woke up alone and had time to think about how his life would change. Except, he never developed a sensitivity to light, nor any aching bloodthirst.

Finally, he was concerned enough that something horrible might be happening behind the lack of vampiric symptoms, and visited Chroma Medical. It was a corporate hospital known to help vampires and other creatures.

"...You do know vampires can draw blood without turning, right?" the nurse asked with a reassuring smile. "There are people who make a living letting themselves be bitten."

"Oh... really?" Before the night Vernon got bitten by a vampire, he never expected to be fraternizing with one. Then, a lovely woman he thought was human revealed she wasn't, and he woke up with fearful regrets. On retrospect, it wasn't an entirely horrible experience, and he could imagine it normalized to an extent. And, he was always looking for ways to generate more income.

"How does that work..?" he asked. "I mean, how does one get involved in something like that?"

"It's a matching service we offer," the nurse nodded with a smirk. Vernon was suddenly very interested, but she continued. "Unfortunately, you wouldn't qualify," she added.

"What? Why not? Because I got bitten already??" he was wondering if he was somehow tainted by the experience.

"Any vampire that wants blood can just pick up a pint of average Joe blood in most stores...," she said it gently with a shrug. "The people bringing in enough money to live off of...," she was trying to be delicate. "...have extra special blood... that isn't sold in stores."
