THE MOMENT

"Oh, dear," Glory gently sighed as she headed to the door. "At this hour?" It was well past 10 p.m., and no visitors were expected that late. That limited the possibilities of what Glory would find behind the door, and she knew none of them would make her night easier. She flung the door open without bothering to check the peephole; she'd guessed correctly that there was no reason to. She looked down at the wicker basket holding a sleeping baby and shook her head.

"You poor thing," she knelt to grab the basket, and she studied the infant as she carried it inside. "You're looking a little pale too...," she added. She carried it straight to the nurse's office to assess the situation. Glory Steel was one of the Matrons in training at the orphanage. The nurse was technically on the premises; she had her own room, but Glory didn't see the need to wake her up. She kept the lights dim so as not to wake the child either, and she grabbed a node from the nurse's drawer.

The node was a clear glass card made of tiny nano machines. It had a lot of uses, functioning as an inter-universe phone and texting device, but at the moment, she was using its scanning capabilities to inspect the child. It allowed her to see the baby's aura, mostly purple with flashes of red. She'd had enough experience to identify the pattern, but the node helpfully labeled everything for her as well.

"Well, I called that one," Glory giggled to herself when the word 'Vampire' appeared. "I told you you were looking a little pale. Don't worry about a thing, little guy," she smiled down at it as she carried the basket to one of the nurseries that she knew was empty. Vampires have a rough reputation, but you're starting off in the right environment," she kept chatting as she carried it through the vast, dark halls.

"You'll make plenty of friends, this orphanage is for people just like you," she was looking down at it, and all the extra motion woke it up. The baby opened his eyes, revealing deep, blood-red eyeballs, and it started to cry.

"Maybe you're hungry?" Glory asked herself. She had no idea when the last time the child ate was. "Let's go see what's in the kitchen!" she smiled as she changed direction. "I wonder what blood type is your favorite...,"
