THE MOMENT

The emperor was concerned by the pink-haired teenager's sudden appearance. She emerged from a tall black portal at the back of his throne room, and fortunately, all eyes were on him at the time. The gathered nobles were already in the process of thanking the emperor for his time over the last couple of days as they headed toward the row of open, labeled portals to take them directly to their lands. The girl waited patiently, which the emperor appreciated, and no one noticed her presence. With the last noble gone and the throne room now mostly empty, the teen approached the emperor along the lush red carpet path.

"Hello, Emperor Brad," the teen smiled once she was close enough. "My name is Justice, and I represent Sharp Development," she said.

"I figured," Brad, the emperor, nodded. "What do you want?" He actively tried to avoid sounding rude, but it was the most prominent question in his mind, and he felt it was a valid one. Sharp Development was a multiversal corporation that was important to be aware of when running an interstellar empire. But, he'd been very careful not to run afoul of them, and he had no idea why Justice was there.

"I'm afraid the size of your empire is pushing the limits of acceptable. You need to pare it down and maintain that lower baseline." As little as he trusted any corporation, he'd hoped Sharp Development was more accommodating than a standard evil company. It stung to learn he was wrong, but he wasn't going to roll over without a fuss.

"That's not true at all! I limited all my technology and got all the right permits! Check!" he said. "We don't have any advanced technology or anything of the sort! My forces are well within the valid size of a medieval-era empire. All my technology is medieval! I'm just really efficient at governing!"

"And...," Justice smiled as she gestured at the line of open portals. "... easily accessible portals to other habitable planets," she said.

"Well, everyone has those!"

"Not in medieval times, they didn't," Justice shook her head. "It doesn't matter if you classify them as magic or technology, but they fall into one of those sorts of categories. They're very clearly unnatural. Thus, if you continue to use them, your current empire is not allowed to be this large. You're going to want to trim it down by the end of the week," she said. "Otherwise, it will be done for you."
