THE MOMENT

"There's someone we can ask," Karin spoke up as soon as she saw the figure approaching them from a distance. Karin, and her twin sister, Davina, were wandering along a dusty road after sunset. There were tilled fields on either side waiting to be seeded, but the velvety night obscured almost everything outside their immediate vision. Almost everything, except for a stranger that glowed with a blue light that likely wouldn't have been visible in the sun, but easily stood out like a chilling beacon in the dark. He seemed to notice them too, and began his approach to meet them.

"Oh," Karin commented once they were close enough to the stranger, but she managed to play down her surprise. He was clad in green and brown leathers with a bow on his back, each surface glowed with the same magical blue light.

"Hi," Davina spoke up quickly. "I've obtained the Assassin's ring, proof that I've defeated a murderer, and I'm hoping to put their spirit to rest," she explained.

He looked at her, glanced at Karin, then back to Davina before smiling with a nod.

"That's nice," he said. "Then, you're not lost?" he asked. The sisters exchanged a look of confusion, and Davina smiled at him again.

"I thought that might be enough," she mumbled the excuse quickly, then met the man's eyes. "I'm not lost. Do you know where I can find the ghosts of the Royal family?" she asked.

"Ghosts?" he shook his head. "No, I worked here for 229 years and not once did I see a ghost." The sisters were identical twins, but they were still separate people. In that moment, each of them had a different reaction. Karin had a small fit of giggles while Davina wondered where they went wrong.

"Are we on the wrong Server?" Davina voiced her concern aloud, then looked at Karin. "What's so funny?"

"Well, if you girls ain't lost, I'll just get on back to my post," he waved politely, then wandered away toward the spot they initially saw him.

"Nothing," Karin grinned and shook her head. "It's just, from here," she waved at the elven peasant still glowing in the dark. "I thought he might be a ghost, until we got up close and saw his ears," she said. "And then, it was funnier when he said he'd worked here 229 years without seeing a ghost, because he totally looks like one."

"Yeah," Davina nodded with a smile. "I thought he looked like one too. But, the quest says 'Human family', so I'm gonna guess we're on the wrong Server."

"I want to come back to this one after you're done though," Karin said as Davina prepared a portal to try another Server. A black hole opened on the ground between them, and Davina stepped on it like a solid surface, with Karin doing the same.

"No problem," Davina nodded. "Why?"

"I wanna see what quest he gives if we tell him we're lost. That glowing spell looks kind of fun."
